Tips for building self-confidence

Not everyone is born with an inbuilt sense of self-confidence. Sometimes it can be hard to develop confidence, either because of personal experiences that have caused you to lose confidence, or if you suffer from low self-esteem.

There are a couple of handy things you can do to build your confidence. Some of them are just little changes to your frame of mind, and others are things you have to work on for a bit longer to make them familiar habits.

1. Look at what you’ve already achieved

Sometimes it can be easy to focus on what you haven’t done. It’s easy to lose confidence if you feel like you haven’t achieved anything. Focusing on stuff you have done, big or small, can help you gain perspective on all your talents and abilities.

Write down a list of all the things you’re proud of in your life. Think of the things you have achieved, whether it’s getting a good mark on an exam or even learning to ride a bike. Keep this list close and add to it when you do something you’re proud of. When you’re low in confidence, pull this list out and use it to remind yourself of all the awesome stuff you've done.

2. Think of things you're good at

Everyone has strengths and talents, what are yours? Have a look at our fact sheet on strengths and work out how you can build on yours. Recognising what you’re good at and trying to build on those things can be a really useful way of building confidence in your own abilities.

3. Set some goals

Set some goals and aim to achieve them. By proving to yourself that you can get stuff done, you’ll prove to yourself what you’re capable of achieving. They don’t have to be big goals; they can even be things like baking a cake or planning a night out with friends. Just little things that can be ticked off a list and help you gain self-confidence in your ability to get stuff done.

4. Talk yourself up

You’re never going to feel confident if you have a negative commentary running through your mind telling you you’re no good. Think about your self-talk and how that might be affecting your self-confidence. Have a read of our fact sheet on self-talk to get some handy tips on turning your negative self-talk around.

5. Get a hobby

Try to find something that you’re really passionate about. Do you like playing footy? Like building model trains? Think of some of the stuff you’re really interested in and commit yourself to giving them a go. Finding stuff that you’re passionate about will help you find stuff that you’re good at. Chances are, if you’re interested or passionate about a certain activity you’re likely to be good at it as well.

The reason why we should Welcome Failure

The reason why we should Welcome Failure

Who likes to fail?

That’s what I thought.

For most of us failure’s shameful, embarrassing, and even scary. Maybe it means you don’t have what it takes. Maybe this dream isn’t meant to be. What if everyone’s laughing or judging?

But if you ask the very successful, they’ll tell you a different story. They’ll tell you failure’s not only good, but necessary for these 6 reasons…

Reason#1:
Failure means you’re trying—Congratulations. There’s no succeeding without getting off your bottom and throwing your hat in the ring. If you’re starting to fail, it means you’ve begun the journey. You’re making concerted efforts to get somewhere or learn a skill or achieve something.

Okay, the road may be bumpy and full of potholes, but you’re taking the steps (and making the mistakes) necessary to get to that destination. If you stop, its true you won’t fail anymore. But you also won’t succeed.

Reason#2:
Failure brings you closer to your goal– Unfortunately, there are no shortcuts. You’ve started that trek, but it’s harder than you thought or scarier. Maybe it’s taking too long.

Remember, every step, no matter how hard and frustrating, brings you closer. Keep walking. Stay the course. With each hardship you overcome, you’re inching your way toward that vision. You’re learning. You’re growing. You’re developing that important thick hide which leads me to…

Reason#3:
Failure toughens you up — Ever met a successful person who was a wussy? Me neither. It doesn’t mean they’re hard, cynical people. But along the way, they adapted resiliency. They kept going despite terrible odds or sometimes crushing defeat. They adapted. They rebounded. They got back on that horse. They strengthened the muscles needed to go on.

Failure teaches you this. In fact, success is impossible without toughness. And if you don’t have it to begin with, believe me, failure will help you develop it.

Reason#4:
Failure teaches you important life lessons— Alas, for most of us, there’s no other way to learn than making mistakes. How else do we know what to do except for trying? But even mistakes shouldn’t be seen as failures. They’re lessons. They’re steppingstones. They’re guideposts.

Mistakes mean you’re paying your dues. If you read the story of most (if not all) successful people, it wasn’t an easy glide to the home plate of victory. It was a long, arduous journey pitted with frustration and sometimes pain. But they learned and kept going. And in the end, they reaped the rewards.

Reason#5:
Failure is better than regret – The world is littered with people who gave up. And many feel a certain ache because of it. Maybe things got too hard. Or it took too long. Maybe someone said something snarky they took to heart.

There are always a million reasons to quit. But there’s usually only one reason to go on. And it’s an important one. You’ll have a happier, more fulfilled life if you keep trying, even when it’s hard. Instead of that ache, you’ll feel a sense of pride.

Reason#6:
Failure teaches you what you love – What are you willing to go through for your dream? I learned this hard lesson myself with writing. Let’s face it, for every drop of encouragement, there’s an ocean of discouragement. And some people decide it’s not worth the effort. And I get that.

But then there are the masochistic crazies (like myself) who decide, yup, this hurts so good. I’m going to keep going despite the torturous frustration at times. It wasn’t till I got thrown off that horse again and again that I realized I’m here for the long haul. Writing Gods, I said, you might as well get used to me. I’m not going anywhere. I climbed back on.

Is that how you feel about your dream? Will you do whatever it takes to achieve it? Then you’ve been given a gift. You’ve been taught what you love. And not everyone has that.

In the end, failure’s not the opposite of success. Failure’s the bridge. Failure’s the initiation rite, those necessary steps you must take, no matter how hard, no matter how tenuous.

Next time you’re thrown off that horse do the following. Stand up. Brush yourself off. Check for broken bones.

Then thank failure for teaching you to be tough and resilient. Thank failure for guiding you to your destiny. Thank failure for giving you that steely determination needed to keep going.

So are you ready?

How to Overcome from Negative Thinking

How to Overcome from Negative Thinking

Negative thinking appears to be more effective than positive thinking. It seems that with most people, positive thinking requires some effort, whereas, negative thinking comes very easily. This has much to do with education and the environment one has been living in.

If you believe that you are going to fail, you will unconsciously sabotage every opportunity to succeed. If you are afraid of meeting new people or having close relationships, you will do everything to avoid people and relationships, and then complain that you are lonely and nobody loves you.

The power of negative thinking in action

1. Do you often think about difficulties, failure and disasters?
2. Do you keep thinking about the negative news see and hear on the TV, or read in the newspapers?
3. Do you see yourself stuck and unable to improve your life or your health?
4. Do you frequently think that you do not deserve happiness or money, or that it is too difficult to get them?

If you do, then you will close your mind, see no opportunities, and behave and react in such ways, as to repel people and opportunities.

The mind often, doesn't judge or examine thoughts and opinions before accepting them. If what it hears, sees and reads is always negative, it accepts this as a standard.

The media constantly bombards the mind with a lot of information about disasters, catastrophes, wars and other unhappy events. This information sinks into the subconscious mind, and then, manifests as your habitual manner of thinking. By occupying the mind with depressing and pessimistic thoughts you radiate negative energy into the surrounding world, and therefore, create and recreate more negativity, failures and disasters.

The mind is neutral energy. The way you think determines whether the results are positive and beneficial, or negative and harmful. It is the same energy acting in different ways.

The good news is that persistent inner work can change habits of thinking. You must be willing to put energy and time to pursue positive thinking, in order to change your mental attitude.

Simple Tips to Overcome Negative Thinking:

1. Every time you catch yourself thinking a negative thought, replace the thought with a positive one.
2. If you catch yourself visualizing failure, visualize success instead.
3. If you hear yourself using negative words in your conversation, switch to positive words.
4. Instead of saying, "I cannot", say, "I can". Most of the time you can, but choose to say "cannot", due to fear, laziness or lack of self esteem.
5. Do you repeat negative words and phrases in your mind? Change them to positive ones. Yes, this requires you to be more alert, and to expend some effort, but you want to change negative thinking into positive thinking, don't you?
6. Allow more positive attitude into your life. Have more faith in yourself and expect positive results. Affirmations and visualization can take you a long way in this direction.
7. Decide that from today, from this very moment, you are leaving negative thinking behind you, and starting on the way toward positive thinking and behavior.

Positive Quotes

"जितना एक मूर्ख वयक्ति किसी बुद्धिमानी भरे उत्तर से नहीं सीख सकता उससे अधिक  एक बुद्धिमान एक मूर्खतापूर्ण प्रश्न से सीख सकता है।"
ब्रूस ली

सकारात्मक सोच का जादू| Effect of Positive Thinking
